Seaweed Biopolymers - Value Adding with Circular Products

Fionnuala Quin, Founder & CEO, Kelpy, Australia

About the speaker:

Fionnuala Quin Founded Kelpy in Jervis Bay NSW in 2021 to find a solution to the global plastic crisis and empower coastal communities with a regenerative blue economy. Raised in aquaculture in a WA Fishing town, Fionnuala realised the regenerative power of seaweed early in life and the potential for global impact, empowering (predominantly female) farmers and First Nations coastal communities.

Today the Kelpy team spans the globe comprising world-leading seaweed polymer scientists, microplastics experts and financial innovators. Together we’ve set a course to scale our global pellet production model, unlocking the world's fastest growing blue economy.

Kelpy pellets replace the most prolific plastics on earth while outcompeting bioplastic alternatives on sustainability and price. Best of all, our circular solution unlocks benefits from sea to soil.

Organisation:

Kelpy is an algae biotech company with a novel solution for replacing single use plastics with seaweed polymers. They are committed to leveraging their technology to bring positive uplift to local communities and ecosystems around the world. The Kelpy Pellet innovation is a drop-in solution for existing plastic manufacturers to create 100% bio-derived, seaweed-based products using abundant and ethically sourced seaweeds. Kelpy is making plastic replacement affordable worldwide. Avoiding 100 million tonnes of ocean plastic waste by 2032. With an in-depth understanding of the sea-to-soil value chain, Kelpy is partnering globally to power the exciting transition to circular products.

Presentation:

Kelpy completed several industrial trials over the past few years and learned a great deal about the seaweed value chain. The opportunities to value-add seaweed biomass products with fractionated uses and circular products is immense. Working across the value chain via purpose-driven collaborations can unlock win-win’s in the growing seaweed industry, as well as maximise our collective impact for people and planet.
