Growing algae on top of the world
Philip James, Senior Scientist, Nofima, Norway
About the speaker:
Phil James is a senior scientist at Nofima, Tromsø in the north of Norway. He has spent over 30 years researching the aquaculture of low trophic species. First in New Zealand working with lobsters, abalone and sea urchins and for the past 15 years in Tromsø working on king crab, sea urchins and more recently on the cultivation of kelp and red seaweeds in the Arctic. He also led the H2020 project AquaVitae on increasing the sustainable production of low trophic species in the Atlantic.
Organisation:
Nofima is a leading, independent food research institute with over 360 employees. The three main areas of focus are aquaculture, the food industry and fisheries, but we also have vast experience when it comes to interdisciplinary projects. Our research includes the entire food chain, from the start of food production, through harvesting, processing and packaging, to commercialisation and marketing. We are also experts in research on safe, healthy and tasty food, and focus on the development of production methods that can utilise every bit of raw material.
Presentation:
In this short pitch Phil James will explore the potential and possible challenges of growing kelp and red seaweeds in the far north of Norway.
